This study tries to investigate the possible causality among the consumption of alcohol, drug use and the sexual behaviors in which teenagers and young adults are actively involved. Employing OLS and 2SLS methods with the two data sets of National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 (NLSY97) and National Longitudinal Survey Young Adult Sample (NLSYAS), we are able to show that there is a positive relationship between alcohol consumption and the sexual behaviors of teenagers and young adults. Since the validity of 2SLS method and its estimate is still questionable, however, it is difficult to establish the causality between substance use and teenage and young adult sexual behaviors. Our findings suggest that substance use is not causally related to teenage sexual behavior, although we cannot definitely rule out that possibility.
